Vaginismus

Vaginismus is described as recurrent or persistent involuntary tightening of muscles around the vagina whenever penetration is attempted.

The symptoms include burning or stinging pain upon penetration, as well as intense fear or loss of desire when penetration is attempted.

It is a complex psychosomatic condition and the causes can be varied, including: painful first or further sexual experience, sexual abuse, fear of getting pregnant, or a belief system (often unconscious) that sex is wrong or immoral.

Vaginismus isn't ‘only’ about penetrative sex, it affects other areas too: the emotional and mental connection between a couple, confidence and self-esteem.

It can painfully interfere with regular gynaecological examinations, investigations and treatment for infertility (which may be caused by vaginismus) and the use of tampons or menstrual cups.

As such, I believe it needs more than one healing modality to find resolution.

I can help with the psychosexual side of understanding. I can suggest activities for you to do alone and with your partner (if you have one) whilst working through any cognitive and emotional aspects. I can also combine this with Reiki, a form of energy healing.

Our sacral chakra (the one linked to our reproductive organs) is also linked with emotion so, unresolved painful emotions can lead to energy becoming stuck here which means the body can’t work as effectively in this area.

Together with my relationship, infertility and psychosexual experience as a counsellor, plus my experience with Hypnotherapy, Reiki and knowledge of energy in the body and beyond, we can work on relaxing your mind and body to work in harmony again.

If you are unsure about any of the treatments or are new to them, feel free to get in touch and ask any questions you have before you book.
