Hypnotherapy FAQ

How does hypnosis work?

Hypnosis happens automatically anytime a person becomes deeply relaxed or highly focused - triggering a change in brainwave frequency. It happens when a person daydreams, whilst driving, reading a book, or watching a film.

Using specially chosen word suggestions the hypnotherapist can guide and prompt the hypnosis in clients to help facilitate changes.

What does hypnosis feel like?

It is often described as a very relaxing, and pleasant experience giving them a feeling of well-being. The most common feelings reported include a feeling of heaviness or sensation of floating, deep relaxation, a change in temperature, slight body twitches, eye fluttering, and a change in breathing pattern.

Generally speaking, clients hear and remember most of what is said during the session. They are very aware of their own body and breathing, as well as the temperature of and sound in the room. Most people are actually more (not less) aware of what is going on when they are hypnotised. A very small number of people go so deeply into hypnosis that they have no memory of the session at all, but most hear and remember what went on.

Do I need to be in a deep trance like state?

This is a common misconception, whereas really effective work can be done in light trance-like states too - as many can then more easily remember the suggestions given.

You are in control at all times, you can choose to stop at any time. You can’t be made to do anything you don’t want to do, such as go against your own values, morals, ethics.

Can anyone become hypnotised?

Yes, anyone who wants to be hypnotised, can be. Some people are more susceptible than others, however it is a very natural reaction for the body and mind.

What happens if I stay hypnotised?

Don’t worry, this won’t happen. You will come out of hypnosis as instructed.

Even in self-hypnosis, you will naturally come out of it once your needs for that session have been fulfilled. It may feel like waking up from a nap.

How many sessions will I need and how much will it cost?

How many sessions are needed depends upon your motivation and the type of therapy you are seeking.

In many cases only one or two sessions are necessary. Calling for your free telephone consultation will allow us to discuss your needs, and evaluate how many sessions you may require, or if some other form of therapy is more suitable.

How long is a session?

For individual sessions, the initial consultation lasts about 90 minutes. The first 30 minutes are Free, and you can then decide if you wish to go on. Subsequent sessions are usually 60-90 minutes long.
